Hey guys,

So I'm a game dev. learning about web design and development and this is my first website(a portfolio site expressed in the language of a corporate giant).

I expect critical responses but as I'm so new to web design I'm looking for direction. If it's bad, which part is the worst? What's the most important thing I should be learning more about?

A Jono Company

I appreciate the time of anyone who has a look; so in advance, thank you :)

Cheers
Jono

Thats really good for a first attempt at a website.

I wouldnt mix alignments though, better to stick to left alignment throughout, it looks much better.

Your site doc type is HTML 4, I would recommend switching to XHTML and making sure your code validates through the W3C validator. Its a good learning exercise to go through the code and work out the proper practice for how to write code in the semantic correct way.

Experiment with font stacks, you would be surprised what a difference a nicer font can make, even under the constrictions of what is web safe.

Good start though.

I would suggest the following:

Footer content needs to be a darker color. A lot of people may find it hard to read.

The slider text is too squashed together. Consider spacing the lines out a bit.

Latest news would look better in like a box to seperate it from other content.

I would agree with Brown2005 the footer is hard to read, the light colour and underline makes it a bit difficult.

Just one other minor observation, the title is very similar to the menu options (close in size, typeface and colour) you may want to differentiate it a little more.

Nice site Jono. Agree with the text being a little squashed.

My main observation for improvement would be to slow the slider down a little as it doesn't give you enough time to read the content within it.

Looks really cool!

Cheers for all the feedback guys, I was expecting maybe one reply that told me how crap it was =/.

Updated version is now up with pretty much all improvement ideas. I didn't really change the title, though I did add a subtitle which differentiates it a teeny bit. You guys didn't complain about it but there were some major browser compatibility issues bofore. They're all gone now :)

Looking back half an hour later, I'm not sure I agree with how I separated the Latest news section. The metaphor was to imprint a corner of a page with the idea that it was representative of that section being a teaser for the rest of the news page. Though that doesn't seem at all obvious, maybe needed to add a drop-shadow.

How's the slider text now? Tbh, I didn't have the eye to see it as a problem before, so it's hard to correct it.

Now to work on getting it W3 validated and start sending it off to possible contractors =D

Cheers

Ithink you are to change background - in order to make it attractive. Maybe, add some amazing images to it. Now you website looks a bit boring. So, add some more details.

Cheers for the response Chica25.

What sort've background do you think would look good? I'm weary of putting anything too striking as it goes against the subtleness of the rest of the site. Maybe a subtle off-colour pattern?

in latest firefox on windows there is a line through "latest news" and
"Dogg.co is most definitely better than catt.co."

underline your links and/or make them different colour

Like the layout. but I have to see there not much design in it. It's too plain. add some color to your website will make big different.
