This is kind of puzzling to me but I have a dynamic menu that appears behind a Javascript-based image gallery.

This works fine on my work laptop (Mac) but for some reason the menu appears behind the image gallery on my home laptop (Windows) using the same browser (Safari).

I figure it could have something to with z-index but why would it appear fine on one laptop but not another?

If it is something to be concerned about then what can I do to sort it (if it is z-index how do I add it to my Javascript code?)?

z-index often needs a position: relative (or position: absolute;) to work.

My drop down menus also used to be hidden behind a javascript image slider until I added

position: relative; z-index: 2; }

to the containing div of the javascript and

position: relative; z-index: 5; }

to the menu containing div.

Your dropdown menu does go over the top of the lower images in my Firefox on Windows.

The image gallery is flash, Flash has a notorious z-index problem.

That's right. You have flash and javascript so you probably need my position: relative and different z-indexes and this:-

<param name="wmode" value="transparent"/>

in the flash object tag
and this:-

wmode="transparent"

in the embed tag.

The object and embed tags aren't in the usual HTML markup, they are in a js file swfobject.js (I can see the object tags and embed tags but they are all coded in a more complicated javascript code).

Nevermind, got it working after adding fo.addParam("wmode", "transparent"); to the code below:
