I have been asked to install a shopping cart for a client. I have suggested PP website payments standard because I have it on my own personal e commerce website and am thus familiar with it.
However, how do I set this up for a client?
Would they have to open a PP account themselves and then set up the shopping cart themselves (which I think would be too much for them)?
I could do it for them but wouldn't this mean them giving me access to their PP account with all the security questions that raises.
And how do I edit/maintain or add new buttons/products etc. for them (again, would this not mean I'd have to log into their account?)
Thanks in advance.

So long as your client sets up the account and you have the email linked to that account, you can then add products etc onto his site through his website. As long as the information submitted to paypal is correct then I dont see a problem.

Thanks pat24. Yes, I'd thought of that, but there is a value that goes with each PP button created, like so:
<input type="hidden" name="hosted_button_id" value="2456098"/>
This is generated by PP during the button creation process. The price also can't be altered (as far as I can see) without access to the client's PP account..
I suppose what I really need is a means of having access to the clients "My Saved Buttons" section of their PP account, but with no access to the rest of the account..
Thanks again..

Well you'd obviously need a a seperate PayPal that the client has access to as I'm assuming they'll want to transfer/mamage their money at some point
Simply get them to setup a new account and enable IPN - job done really. You don't need to login at any stage.
With buttons if you're using paypal's hosted buttons then the user will need to create these manually each time - personally, I think this is a really naff and time consuming way of selling online.
The preferred way is to use website payments standard is to maintain a shopping cart on your site and then when the user checks out, pass the whole cart to Google. Using this method you can let the user add products using a small admin area and then get your cart to generate all the hidden paypal form fields for you. YOu also have the option to process IPN data using this method too.
