My mate wants me to do him an ecommerce site, there wont be thousands of products, he just wants something that has an admin area to check stock, prices, sales, profit and track orders etc.

My selection for this is open cart.

Just wondering how much to charge him, i was thinking between £800 and 1k for everything?

As this is my first e-commerce site, is there anything you guys might have slipped up on like contract, price or spec of work etc?

Just wondering how much i should charge, info regarding SSL certificates, what and why? Also payment methods and any middle man charges etc?

Just anything from your experiences that would help me really.

Cheers
Paul

I have just installed OpenCart and from first glance around, it looks pretty simple.

Myself, im in the same boat as you, designing my first ecommerce site.

Hope it works out for you! :)

800 - 1k is reasonalbe.. we charge £1200 if we installing a custom template and full configuration of the back end / payment modules / shipping modules etc.

if these are mates rates then they would be about right.

Just find a host who will look after you :)

800-£1k is very reasonable considering most agencies charge upwards of £6k for ecommerce sites. I once had a quote of £22k from an agency just for the development of an ecommerce site. It was quite a complex store with some bespoke functionality, but still...

Yep totally depends on what the client wants and if a bespoke system is being used then the price is always more. About 1k for using prewritten software (such as opencart) that simples requires a quick install) is about right though.

Our ecommerce solutions are bespoke and start at around £2k - I did used to use opencart and zen cart but got sick and tired of trying to add bespoke fnctionality into them, so decided to write my own solution.

I did a freebie for family, using WordPress and the Ecommerce plugin... Was a bumpy ride...But is a good solution if you can get the cart working without much trouble...

Contract wise make sure you explicity say you're not going to add all his products and categories for him, as this can be very time consuming - have been caught out on this one myself before.

The rest of the charges depend on what type of checkout solution you'll be using. For example, take SagePay Direct. People will checkout without leaving your site. For this solution you'll need to PCI DSS compliant (SagePay charge £175 for this), an SSL certificate (prices vary, some hosts also charge for installing 3rd party SSL certificates). You'll also have merchant account charges per transaction and a monthly charge to the PSP (Sagepay in this case).

Take SagePay Form integration as another example. For this, customer checkout PayPal style, leaving and returning to your site. SagePay charge a flat fee of £20 per month plus your merchant fees. You won't need an SSL certificate here as the checkout pages are hosted by SagePay (who are PCI DSS complaint to the highest level).

Compare this with something as simple as PayPal website standard and you are charged on a per transaction basis. Use Paypal Website Payments Pro they are charge an additional monthly fee as well as the charges per transaction.

There are tons more examples, but in short, it depends on what solution you intend on using.

Im going to start off with open cart and do my mum a simple ecommerce site for her aloe vera products. Will probably use something simple for the checkout like paypal.

She does this in her spare time so its only something on the side she does as a hobby if you like, so i dont think she will be wanting to pay all these monthly costs.

So thinking using something like paypal/opencart would suit?

Thanks for the in depth reply +1
