Hi,

I've been thinking of getting an iPhone4 or a Andriod run phone, and was wondering if any of you guys actually use yours for work purposes?

And if yes, What phone / What for / and what apps?!!

And really, if it's worth me forking out for a new phone as I do want to go Freelance as soon as I can...

Cheers

I bought an iphone when I started my job, although it was more of excuse than an actual reason - cos I just really wanted one! Don't tell my wife. :)

I've had company phones for the past 8 years. I've had various BlackBerry's, up until a few years ago when they released the iPhone 3G. I've since had a 3GS and now I am using an iPhone 4.

I use Exchange for my email and contacts, which works a treat on the iPhone. Really like Safari, and also use Opera Mini. iPhone 4 camera is pretty good, and takes excellent video.

The Google maps app along with the built in compass has helped me find many pubs and cafes :-)

And of course, the iPod features are fantastic.

As for the apps, I have a few but not a great deal that are necessarily for work!

Well, im swaying towards a Samsung which runs on andriod and already have a list of apps to get!!

But...Wondered if I would actually use it? Do I really NEED it?

Do you often use these apps whilst out of the office? Have they saved you precious time??

I spend two hours a day on the train twidling my thumbs...when I could be doing some work or play!!

Hmmm.....decisions decisions..!

The iPod feature is what got me interested in getting an iPhone. When I had the opportunity to get an iPhone from work, I figured it would save me the cost of buying a separate iPod. Without it, travelling and visits to the gym would be a lot less interesting!

For me, the killer app was getting my email on the move. So I guess any device that was capable of doing that would have suited, but the fact I wanted an iPod swayed my decision to get an iPhone.

The only app that's really helped me is the 'Aroundme' app. Coupled with Google Maps and the built in compass, it's helped me find cafes, parking, petrol stations and local taxi companies.

Some of my colleagues use HTC phones, which from what I've seen look pretty sweet.

Going back to your question; Do I really NEED it? Well, probably not. But, sometimes you just have to indulge yourself.

I've got a HTC Desire on android and love it... I wouldn't say I use it for web dev as such, but use it more as a personal organizer. Got all my emails, contacts, calendar and events sync'd etc. And there are quite a lot of useful apps on it too but also lots of pointless time wasters and gimicks lol.

It's really good for keeping up with social media etc. too.

I don't think any phone is a truly suitable product to do any web design/development work on.
Emails can be read/replied to on any Smartphone, so there's no need for the £600 iPrice tag.

Having said that, my iPhone 4 saves me hours upon hours of time (over each 18 month contract):

  • It checks my emails every hour (you can set this to more frequent intervals if your Inbox is busier than mine!)
  • Organises my data nicely
  • Never fails, no half-hearted software on it
  • Everything just works, no problems, no hassle - no need to even setup email accounts since it grabbed the required info from my Macs.
  • Notices dates/email addresses/numbers/etc. so I can click whatever it may be and add to calendar/address book/go to website/etc. instantly
  • Push notifications for Facebook (which I rarely use to be fair) and other applications allowing for free texting etc.
  • Multi-tasking allowing for me to have Skype running at all times. If someone messages me, I get a notification, slide to unlock and have a text chat with them. If they call me, I slide and have a voice chat. All free for both parties.

I'm not saying that the iPhone 4 is the only Smartphone to offer all of the above, but it's certainly the best looking!

Edit: And the display on the iPhone 4 - I still look at mine in wonder.

Queued for an iPhone 4 - for twelve hours infact. Yes, I'm an early adopter, but it truly is the best phone I've ever had. I won't regurgitate all the reasons people have already said in this thread; but I will say if you're tempted, go for it!

I've always used blackberry, but I'm considering an iphone. The only thing worrying me is the poor device security. If I was to lose or have my iphone stolen it would be very easy for someone to retrieve the necessary data from it, which could be photos, passwords or whatever they wanted.
