I've recently launched my website and am trying to get to grips with web marketing. I've heard there are some do's and dont's, like you shouldn't register on a bookmarking site and immediately post links back to your site. I was wondering though, what initial steps you guys take to promote a new site and if there are any other things I should watch out for?

I registered on twitter when I launched and have been tweeting new services and news. I got a follower on twitter today and their page was just full of links to design resources. Should I keep my account more active by posting links to other people's (vetted) design resources or would that look bad for a web design company?

Does anyone know of a reliable and current guide for beginners? Any advice appreciated.

cheers guys

I try to publish at least 12 other peoples things in between each one of mine.

The more value you add to your followers the more value and trust you gain.

Its true you shouldnt push your message out there too forcefully - but don't lose sight of why you are in Twitter or Facebook.

Have goals before you start. Are you using it to make contacts? To sell your service? To drive traffic to your site. Make sure you work towards that goal.

There are plenty of social media guides out there - feel free to follow me and have a chat on Twitter. Would be happy to point you in the right direction.

Also don't ever be scared to reply and really talk with people you meet on twitter. Really helps expand your network and reach.

:)

Nice to meet you.
