I was just wondering if i have chosen the right ecommerce software in using opencart?

www.pbwebdesign-warrington.co.uk/store

I have set it all up on the above link and it seems to be working using the default template and seems easy enough to customise.

I am just wondering if there are any others that are better than this in terms of ease of use, extra functionality and better support / documentation?

I was reading review of opensource ecommerce software and i cant see OpenCart in any of them! It was all ZenCart, Magento etc!

Wondering if i should have used these: -

- Magento
- ZenCart
- CubeCart

What you guys think? Or is OpenCart as good? Bearing in mind this will be my first ecommerce website.

Cheers

Hi mate,

As you well know, I've just started using OpenCart for my first ecommerce project, and so I had done a bit of research around the subject of carts before I settled on this particular one.

General consensus was that Magento is the more difficult to tinker with, and more aimed towards larger stores. Also, very demanding on a server.

I didn't come up against much research for ZenCart or CubeCart. I think OpenCart is slightly more of the new kid on the block, but I constantly kept hearing good things about its accessibility and clean code. To be honest, thus far, this has been entirely correct.

Unless someone pops in here and completely rips it apart with some hitherto unknown crippling bug it contains, I highly recommend you stick with it. Give it a go for this first ecommerce site you do, then, for your next one you could always move on to try a different cart. I think, if nothing else, OpenCart is considered a good cart to go for as your "first". Hell, it took my virginity, and so far, I'm happy :good:

Your answer (in my opinion) is inside the question. Magento! I use it because I have a lot of time dedicated to my clients website.

If you want to see Magento in action, take a look at www.ualstore.co.uk it is not my website as I stated, it is owned by my client "United Automation". My Company "Hex UK" manages the site and is responsible 100% for what you see.

If you need more help on chosing the right e-commerce, keep this thread active and I willadd my 10 cents when you ask.

Regards, Mark Birchall (Hex UK)

As you're selling web design services (although I'm a little confused by what you say on your site and the questions you ask here) just note that using a pre made solution could be a limitation. Some bigger clients want a bespoke system and if you have one written this can be an absolutely huge job. I have actually had clients checking that we use don't use open source software.

Also, you'll need to be really familar with the open source software you're using. E.g. think of a situation when a client asks to you add in some bespoke feature that isn't included. Do you know the system well enough to add in such functionality. IF you don't, then you're turning away business which isn't good in the long term.
