I have just been on the google webmaster website reading about creating a sitemap here http://www.google.co...&answer=156184.

It says that a sitemap can be created via a text file by listing each url & saving the file as a .txt file.

What are the advantages & disadvantages of composing a sitemap this way?

How do you build your sitemaps?

Also, how do you submit it to your webserver as a sitemap?

Thx.
Lee.

Depending on the client and their needs I create my sitemaps manually via a XML file (in Dreamweaver) or alternatively I use sitemap generator, wordpress sitemap plugins or Joomla components which create the sitemap automatically. Saving time when you're working on a large site.
Small sites though, just create the sitemap as a web page and link to it on your site and also create an XML version and submit it to Google via the Webmaster Tool.

The sitemap provides a method for search engines to instantly crawl your site particularly if its new pages were added, and also, the priorities assists gives search engine thoughts on how they would give significance to each pages of the site.

There is a brilliant tool which is called xml-sitemap generator from here;

http://www.xml-sitem...-generator.html

There is a free version which you run from their site, or the paid version which runs from your webserver automatically (you never have to touch it). the paid version IMO is well worth $19.99

If however your site is wordpress, joomla or some other sort of CMS, you might be able to get a simple plug-in which takes care of the sitemap for you.

hi,
are you creating sitemap for google crawler ?
Sitemaps are very helful when we talk about optimizing a site,
because then all the sublinks and pages of the websites get
indexed by the crawler very easily.

If you have a wordpress website, you can use a free plugin, something called Sitemap Generator and it works pretty good

The simplest way is to use the popular xml online generator: xml-sitemaps.com

Just upload the file generated by the online xml generator (the one with .xml extension) to your root folder of your hosting.

Regarding the advantages & disadvantages, I believe it's just the matter of easiness of creation. As I suggested above, with a few click of a button, XML Sitemaps do everything for you.
