The primary one now is Visual Studio from Microsoft which is geared to creating applications for the .NET Framework. There are many different versions of this which you can use ranging from a FREE version (which you can do most things with) to a team edition which is used by large development teams. Adobe has Dreamweaver although I believe they have dropped support for ASP.NET in their latest version. I have used a mix of the two in the past where I create all of my backend code with Visual Studio and did the front end development using Dreamweaver.

You can obtain the FREE version of Visual Web Developer at http://www.microsoft.com/express/Web/

There are plenty of IDEs out there to use, I'm currently using PHPDesigner but there are free ones out there.

You could try Eclipse or Net Beans - they are primarily for Java developers I think but support PHP, HTML, CSS syntax too.

Aptana is my favorite on Windows. For you I would use Notepad++

Honestly don't mess with Visual Studio unless you are going to be using .Net. From the sound of it, you are just starting out, and don't need anything that bloated.

assuming that you have progressed from Microsoft Notepad you can go one up and use Notepad++ or be lazy and allow the auto complete of Dreamweaver help you out and speed things up. I code mostly in Dreamweaver, using code view so its hand-coding but sped-up - don't bother with the WYSIWYG part of it because if it gets slightly too complicated the site comes out all dodge there...

"Web development" - that (IMO) means more than hand coding HTML/CSS (try getting a job as a web developer on HTML and CSS alone...). With that in mind, a developer needs an IDE with a debugger and auto-complete (that can read classes and documentation) - i.e. Jetbrains, PHPDesigner, VisualStudio, Eclipse and of course, my beloved Netbeans.

Many people refer to web development same as web design, there is no definite answer for this. For creating a website or build a website on Windows, you can consider Adobe Dreamweaver, Visual Studio (for HTML based sites), or Adobe Flash, A4DeskPro site builder for flash based websites. There are also many online-based solutions, but as you asked for Windows based software, these should be the most popularly used packages.

Hello dude, You know it... Microsoft Windows SDK. Windows SDK is the successor of the two and supports developing applications for Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, .NET Framework 3.0, .NET Framework 3.5, and .NET Framework 4.0.

Good Day.

For small websites, I just use vim

For large websites, a software with project management will be nice. I heard that ZEND Studio is good for php but I haven't tried it before.

I tried to use Zend Studio, but it was too bloated and slow for the laptop I use for most of my work. I'd put in a vote for Netbeans.

I personally use notepad++, but some use Adobe Dreamweaver. It is value for money i must say. I just dont like working in design view. Code it in code view, then go back to design view every now and then to get a rough idead of things like colours, fonts etc...

I used Dreamweaver CS3,upgraded to CS5 but now I am using Aptana and I am loving it,but for html/css coding Dreamwever is one of the best tools. Also you can consider using Notepad++ with some nice plugins. If you are doing hard coding in PHP Aptana would be a great choice, also PHP Designer and Net Beans are great for web development.

Many of IDEs are available here for website development. If you are a java programmer I mean if you want to develop a website in java then you may use Netbeans. This includes all the functionality and features of CSS, HTML, JavaScript and many more needed.

Dreamweaver here, works fine for me. As someone above said, in design view it gets confused and throws a wobbly if the design is more complex, but just ignore it.

Have to say I use a selection on assorted tasks, Notepad++ is advantageous to lean initially as many have said however Dreamweaver CS5 adn Apanta (HTML/CSS), Netbeans/eclipse (Java Software Engineer) for PHP (not so much anymore) and visual studio is at a push as with the all singing/dancing Ultimate 2010 version its a bit cumbersome for web development.

PHP wise I use PHPeD by Nusphere... would hands down recommend due to the debugging and live variable monitoring/step by step iteration that I would expect of C, Java or C++.. etc among other features.
