Can anybody explain why my page is wider than it needs to be? I have looked through the code and can't seem to find why it is extending the scroll bar towards the right.

Try removing your margin from your body

and adding 
*{margin:0;padding:0;}
#wrapper{margin:0 auto; overflow:hidden;}
