Im putting together a site for my student radio station, which currently uses joomla. We want to move away from out the box themes, and have a custom website instead.

I've got plenty experience of graphics work and building basic sites, but i've never used a CMS before. What I want to do is build a new site, and then place the 'news' element from joomla inside a div, creating the content for that page. Is this possible with joomla? is it possible with another CMS?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can offer some advice!

You could just design your own Joomla theme?
If you've got a fair bit of knowledge around website design, it won't take you too long.

There'll be tutorials all over the net, or you could outsource the job to one of many freelancers/design companies who are regular members on these forums, there's a job posting forum here: Looking to hire?

I'm not a big fan of Joomla, I prefer WordPress. You could create any type of website you like pretty much and just incorporate the bits you want. I'm sure this is possible with Joomla too but I wouldn't know how to advise you on it.

Thanks for the replies, thought designing my own theme might have been a lot more work than it actually seems to be, I'm sure I tackle that myself, however I'm not sure that this would give me the full functionality I'm looking for.

I think I may look at wordpress, and integrating that into a new site. My reason for wanting to try doing this with joomla was that it's what the station is already running, so would be easier than shifting to a new CMS.
