Hi Guys

I've got so many websites that teach stuff about webdesign and web code. (Nettuts, Tutorial9, CSS Tricks ..etc)

The guys that write articles for these brilliant sites are honestly brilliant.

There is one thing I have noticed. They all use Macs ! none of the guys I follow on these sites use Windows !

What is it about Macs and Web Design ? Note I am not saying that these guys are brilliant BECAUSE they use Macs (lol that would be silly) .. but Why do they ALL use the Macs ?

Is web design on a Mac more fun than it is on windows ? Is the process easier/cleaner ? .. what is it ?

I'd appreciate some light on this issue.

Thank You.

The Mac computers offer state of the art technology when it comes to graphics and monitor contrast ratio. On top of that, Mac has some of the best software for web developers like Coda.

Mac's don't freeze up (maybe once every 3 months), they offer timemachine (easy backups), bootcamping Windows (dual-booting) and much more!

LOL!!! Sounds like an ad I've read.

It's that more people probably prefer the Mac OS compared to the Windows OS. I have both, code and write apps for both platforms. It's really about what you like. Both machines can be stable and like a rock, and both can constantly crash and have problems. I've seen and experienced both with them. Don't fall into the hype that Macs are superior machines because they're not (no disrespect to the person I quoted).

Anyhoo, The Mac's are decent machines. They have some cool software that's available for it. Depending on what you use, you could find a Mac equivalent (and vice versa). It's all about just trying one of your mates or going down to a store that sells them and getting your feet wet.

Haha, no disrespect taken!

I have 2 Macbook Pro's and a Mac Pro, as well as an HP laptop and a brand new custom built beast. So I have also had my share of both, but as a DESIGNER, I would recommend Mac. I find it that most programmers rather Windows. I never knew why, maybe the Mac OS X interface is too design-y for them!

HP's are generally crappy machines. The company I'm working for, has them in full. Yeah most programmers do use windows, but most write in C++ and I don't know of any decent compilers available for the Mac. I do like writing in Objective-C though. If you have PC building experience and some time on your hands, I would definetly recommend the Hackintosh route. I've build a few and boy,no difference whatsoever.

I use a Mac at work, honestly they're no better.

They still freeze up and make weird mistakes, you'll still lose work, the adobe suite will still somtimes f*ck up, you'll still have connectivity issues.

Take the Apple/PC commercials, for example. One of the reasons they’ve been so successful is because they were funny, but they’re also quite creative. They appear different from any other commercial that’s been on TV or Internet lately. Comparing themselves directly to PC was risky, and let’s face it, they could have been facing some serious legal trouble had they done it wrong. But, they bit the bullet, they took the risk, and it’s certainly paid off.

Most people who own a PC or Apple have seen these commercials or heard them at one point in time or another. These commercials have also spawned numerous spoofs, generated all sorts of links to spread its reach, and even helped build and emphasize the brand. In the end, Apple comes off looking like THE high-end, FUN yet elite product. It looks trendy and people want it because it’s different and THE thing to have.

End of. Love it or hate it.. They have a great brand community.

I was thinking getting Coda if I ever got a Mac. I hear a LOT of good things about it. Plus all them pros I mentioned use it for their work.

Any Coda fans ? I'm getting bored of Dreamweaver. It takes ages to start up :(

The reason that Macintosh computers are widely used by designers is largely historical. Macs were the first computers with desktop publishing capabilities, and originally applications such as Photoshop and Quark Xpress were only available for Mac. This meant that digital design workflows depended on Macintosh computers and software.

In my opinion, today Apple maintain that market position largely thanks to the way they market their computers. Graphic designers are visual people, and Apple's clear, consistent branding and marketing is bound to appeal more than the garish and messy marketing of your average PC manufacturer.

Mac and PC computers are both very powerful today - far more powerful than the average user needs them to be. And most major software applications are available for both platforms (or have an equivalent available). It is no longer software or hardware than dictate consumer computer purchasing decisions, but fashion. Apple are well aware of this fact, and their entire marketing strategy for the past four or five years is based around convincing consumers that their product is "cooler".

I've worked as a web designer for ten years, most of that time on PC. However, if someone asks my advise when buying a new computer I tell them to buy a Mac. Why? Because all their friends have one, and it will make them feel cool.

I'm probably at the point myself where I will seriously consider a mac when I buy my next computer, just because I'm so tired of people saying "What? you're a designer and you use a PC???".

I've not used Coda. On PC I use PHPDesigner as my IDE, which covers me for all my PHP, HTML, JS and CSS work. I don't think there is a clear consensus as to the "best" IDE for PC, there are literally dozens of options available to you - it depends what features are important to you!

great post#10 jnicol

people that say Macs make you a better designer are like the old ladies that buy the most expensive watercolour equipment in the shop for their tuesday night painting class...

The materials don't do the work for you, it's all down to your ability.
