Hi Folks
I have a request for a site where I can allow registered users to maintain their own 'profile page' (it will hold contact details and availability). This info changes every week so I need to make sure they can login and update via a browser based WYSIWYG editor.
I suppose I am looking for a CMS that will generate a profile page for each new user without me having to go in and create one and allocate access rights etc and only they can edit.
So, sorry if this is vague, let me know if I need to expand on requirements. The server supports MySQL and PHP4 / 5.
Thanks for taking the time to read this, and Festive ho hos to you all :-)

Have a play with:
Joomla + Community Builder
http://www.joomla.org/
http://www.joomlapolis.com/
Or:
WordPress + BuddyPress
http://wordpress.org/
http://buddypress.org/
I've not much experience with the latter, but Joomla+CB is quite customisable and should give you the options you need.

I'm a big wordpress fan because it's relatively easy to use. keep in mind that to use buddy press you need to use Wordpress MU (multi-user) and a compatable theme. MU is a neat feature because you can host multiple blogs of the site and it's really expandable.
As far as Joomla goes I really don't like the admin area interface. I'd try Drupal. Both have a learning curve that Wordpress has less of, but if I were you I'd download all of them (they're all opensource and free) and have a go at each and see which you like best.
Cheers! Have a great holiday! Be safe!

Drupal's learning curve is ten times that of Joomla's, not really for beginners.

Try http://www.interlogy.com/
It is professional membership based software that can be added to any website.
One of our clients has used it successfully to provide a free [pre template] web page to all their members. They just have to register to be issued with their own unique password and they can access and update their webpage whenever they like. Our client also used this system to then provide access to their 'Members Only' area of the website. It also has a subscription feature built in if you want to charge members for the access or web page. It has its own admin area to approve / deny / delete - members etc and many more features including mailing list.
Hope this helps and best of luck.

Hi Folks
Thanks for some great advice and ideas.
I installed Joomla a couple of weeks ago and have been getting my head around the structure, settings and access rights - hard to say if it's any steeper than Wordpress at this stage but the documentation is pretty naff! Anyway I think I almost have it the way I want now and I have even started customising the rotating images etc and banners - whahoo:-)
Anyway, I am still testing it and have a couple of users registered and it does indeed allow them to add and edit their own articles as and when they wish, the automated confirmation emails took a while to go through when they registered and I liked the idea it gave them access but no editing rights until I decided to do so!
Thanks to DanL and Seth, I will also be downloading Wordpress to try that out on another existing site and will 'bolt' that on to utilise the news article features and then I can compare which one is best for future needs.
As usual WDF was the place to get the answers - though I may be back to get advice on Joomla further down the line if I encounter any problems - but so far so good!
