By starting with the less competitive terms your success chances could improve considerably. The point is that when your site is new and naturally not having many links and content pages, by beginning targeting the longer terms and sentences, some top rankings would be gained faster and then gradually you could move towards the top terms.

Whats the 2 terms you were considering?
Going for the smaller search may be easier, but there is a reason. After all whats the point unless you get the traffic.

I've been trying to get web design in lincolnshire for ages, I'm not even in the first 100, but I'm page 1 3/4 place for web design boston, lincolnshire.
The only thing I can say is make your web site content rich, loads of key words, phrases, and build some backlinks. I've just finished making my web site from a 6 page web site to a 15+ web site with loads of key words and phrases. I have to wait to see now if it has any effect on cracking the lincolnshire term.

Yes it is best to try for less competitive keywords first. Best, i think, is useing some nested keyword like ABC...where A, B, C all are single keyword and say, B and C are high competing one. But combination Of ABC key phrase is less competing. If you can rank for ABC and go for backlink developments in near future you will see that you have easily coming up for BC and then gradually for B and C alone.

I think its easier to start by aiming to be a big fish in a small pond ie area, then optimise for the larger geographical area later.

Because domain age is such an important factor in overall domain strength I have always targeted less competitive keyphrases first. I would then attempt to compete for more competitive keyphrases after a year or two. Longtail keyphrases or precise regions are a good place to start. In addition you should gain highly targeted traffic like this which helps keep your bounce rate low and CTR high - other important factors especially if you use PPC like Adwords.
