i feel that a blog can greatly boost ur seo where u can add pretty informative and interesting articles and u get to  know visitors comments  and for ur second question having a blog under ur own domain is much better than to use free ones, wordpress is a great  way to create blogs and u can create amazing blogs with those and u need tweak those according to ur site theme  and more over with blogs u get inbuilt rss feeds which also gets traffic to ur site

It might help "SEO" but think of your visitors first and write on-topic articles for them, if you do it right the SEO bit will look after itsself.

Definitely don't use Blogger - it's awful for SEO. WordPress can be customised to be very SEO-friendly. I'd have the blog on my site because
a. increase pages on my site, gives visitors more reasons to stick around
b. links to the blog benefit the site as a whole

First you blog should have unique information and secondly title should be attractive so that readers get attracted towards it! There are so many threads like this you can find similar topics just by searching. Make sure you have good content and people will naturally link to your blog. This is the best way to promote it. Although there are other ways such as article publishing, blog posting, and using social networking sites such as Digg and Twitter. use blog directories and do some link exchange. You can also write guest posts on another blogger's sites, that can help to drive traffic from a blog with more reputation.

I found my wedding photographer through a blog as he posted which venues he had taken photos at so after doing a quick search for wedding photographers for at a specific venues he came up straight away in Google. This made him £1200 of business so yes Blogs are good for SEO when used correctly.

A blog will certainly help if you can post regular and informational content. Searchn engines like new content so updating the blog at least a week will be ideal. Also get your own blog, use something with wordpress and customize it according to your website theme.

Having a blog is a great way to expand your company’s SEO marketing, Your blog should have relevant information about what it is you do and should be used as a way to communicate with your customers.
A blog can be used to help a main website rank better in search engines simply due to increasing inbound, a blog provides users with excellent publishing tools to write and format content in a search engine friendly way. All in all, if you have a website, it would be an excellent idea to also have a blog, covering a relevant topic to your main site. Doing so could be the difference of your site landing on page one, or page doesn’t matter.

Creating a blog is the good idea, but dont try with blogger. Its better to use wordpress which has inbuilt features and plugins to install which gives more seo benefits. Write some interesting articles and based on your visitor views try to write some unique and catchy articles.

If you blog regularly then you can get additional pages indexed quite quickly. It is an excellent chance to target longer tail keywords and porvide links to the money pages of your site. Once you have written your blog it can then be syndicated to many social media sites quickly with a press of a button (if you have social bookmarking tabs)

One thing I'm a bit stuck on - what does a newbie web designer blog about? I dont think I can write any tutorials because they will probably be very flawed due to my inexperience. If, however, I blog about things I am learning this would come across as not being very knowledgable, and might have a negative effect on the visitor's perception of my skills? Any thoughts?

Blog about what you know. Try to brand your site as like 'A Web Designers Journey', 'Memoirs of a Noob' and write about your experiences, what you've learnt. This will help other beginners and people should find it interesting.

You could give your own unique take on events or news in the world of web design. What does it mean if...
At first its just a case of getting some quality posts in there so it doesn't look to new and sparce (like my new site at the mo!!)

Check the site copyblogger or problogger for tips on setting one up. Also pro blogger does an excellent book.

Use your own web domain. It gives you link juice benefits and keeps everything neat and tidy. If you use blogger, then all the link juice goes to them!

First, you blog must have unique information and the second title should be attractive so that readers are attracted to him! There are as many as son, you can find similar items, while seeking. Make sure you have good content and people will naturally link to your blog.

Sorry to jump in on this, but rather than set up a new thread, I thought this would be a good place to ask a few additional questions.

I'm thinking of setting up a blog for my site and have been looking into how best to set it up.

I've so far managed to establish it's better to set up a blog using your own domain with something such as wordpress rather than blogger, but how is it best to set up with your domain?

For example;

  • Should it be another page with my existing site, themed like the site?
  • Should it go on a sub domain such as blog.example.com and follow the theme or not and link to the main site?
  • Should it be www.example.com/blog/ and again, should it follow the theme or not and link to the main site?

Apologies if this question has been asked before, but I couldn't find the answer.

Any comments welcome on how best to set up a blog.

Thanks in advance.

Its completely up to you, but unless you want the blog to be a totally stand alone site, it does make sense for the blog to have (at least) a similar theme to your main site - helps instill a "brand identity".

My blog is under "www.kylecooper.co.uk/blog" and uses the same theme and navigational items as my main site, so for a user they can flick between the two and it feels like its all the same website.

Also, to add to the original topic. Having a blog has definately increased the traffic my website has received, and it ensures my website gets crawled regularly - though I am in dire need of adding some new blogs!!
