A blog can be used to help a main website rank better in search engines simply due to increasing inbound, a blog provides users with excellent publishing tools to write and format content in a search engine friendly way. All in all, if you have a website, it would be an excellent idea to also have a blog, covering a relevant topic to your main site. Doing so could be the difference of your site landing on page one, or page doesn’t matter.

I'm thinking of setting up a blog for my site and have been looking into how best to set it up.
I've so far managed to establish it's better to set up a blog using your own domain with something such as wordpress rather than blogger, but how is it best to set up with your domain?
For example;
- Should it be another page with my existing site, themed like the site?
- Should it go on a sub domain such as blog.example.com and follow the theme or not and link to the main site?
- Should it be www.example.com/blog/ and again, should it follow the theme or not and link to the main site?
Apologies if this question has been asked before, but I couldn't find the answer.
Any comments welcome on how best to set up a blog.
Thanks in advance.

Its completely up to you, but unless you want the blog to be a totally stand alone site, it does make sense for the blog to have (at least) a similar theme to your main site - helps instill a "brand identity".
My blog is under "www.kylecooper.co.uk/blog" and uses the same theme and navigational items as my main site, so for a user they can flick between the two and it feels like its all the same website.
Also, to add to the original topic. Having a blog has definately increased the traffic my website has received, and it ensures my website gets crawled regularly - though I am in dire need of adding some new blogs!!
