Getting Started

This a small list of selected quality resources for getting started maintained by the community. It will only have a few links for each category that's considered the best of the best. It contains information that's just as useful to the experiences as to the beginner.

If you got any good resources, please share them. Note that if it doesn't include anything that isn't covered by existing resources it won't be added unless it's a better alternative. We want to keep this list short to make it easier to beginners to getting started with the best guidance availible.

Discuss and suggest resources in this thread.

Table of Content

General

W3Schoolshttp://www.w3schools.com/
Good place for basic introduction to most of the web standards.

MaxDesignhttp://www.maxdesign...n/checklist.htm
A very nice checklist that includes lots of good links for further reading and details. For instance, how to emulate how colour blind people see your site.

A List Aparthttp://www.alistapart.com/
Excellent online magazine for webdevelopers. Got a wast amount of in-depth articles on anything webdesign related. Even the business side of doing webdesign and dealing with clients.

HTML & CSS

HTML Doghttp://www.htmldog.com/
Recommended for HTML and CSS. It doesn't just teach you HTML and CSS, but also best practices which will be of great value.

Westcivhttp://westciv.com/s...ouse/index.html
Very good for CSS and accessibilities considerations. If you take the time to go through their "Complete CSS Guide" (http://westciv.com/style_master/academy/cs...rial/index.html) you'll end up with a very good understanding of CSS.

Javascript

PHP

PHP.nethttp://www.php.net/docs.php
The PHP manual is very good. It includes examples for most of the functions and includes many more sections than just language reference. It got a Getting Started section with some simple tutorials.
