Hi guys,

I'm designing a site for a good friend of mine who has a telecoms company. Iv been doin some keyword research and have found that the Market is a tough one to get in to.
I'm using Market samurai for my keyword research and have a couple of questions;

1. For a given keyword, how many web pages is concidered low competition?
2. The website will have a new domain, are there any tips for getting a new domain to rank well?
3. Is it best to host your own blog or use a third party?

I have managed to get a roofing company to rank very well on their chosen keywords but their domain was 4 years old.
I have no experience starting from scratch so any tips would be warmly welcomed

thanks
mat

Telecoms is a very saturated sector and has a million and one resellers, all slogging it out for customers.

Domains (or sites) don't "rank", however Google has a system whereby it "ranks" individual pages - called Pagerank.

For your purposes I'd recommend not worry about this an concentrating on writing well crafted text copy for the site - get this right and you're on the right track. Aim your copy at your visitors, the people you want to sell to.

Not sure what you're getting at here... can you elaborate?

What i mean is how do you judge the amount of competition? Is it by how many pages google returns for a given keyword? Or is it how authoritative the top 10 websites are? Or is it a mixture of both?

Basically i have found a keyword phrase that is relevant with a decent amount of searches. When i put this into google it comes back with roughly 37,000 results and to me is very low.

Regards
Mat

It depends on the size of the customer! Is he wanting to compete locally, nationally or on a global scale?

They supply, install and maintain business telephone systems. They do hi speed broadband and telephone lines and also deal with mobile phones for businesses.

Sounds lucrative. Have you tried anything yet? What type of companies is he targeting? How is he currently getting clients?

Yes sorry, we havent tried anything yet he already has contracts with Panasonic, Carrers Wales and Acorn Recruitment to name a few but he wants to be able to compete with the big guns online.

We're still in the design phase ATM and he understands that all the main keywords are swamped by the top ten but i did find 2 in paticualar that we can use.

Im no expert just simply learning, iv had success with another company but any guidence on the best way to start is much appriciated :)

regards

Don't depend on this as anything other than something to take into consideration.

Bid competition / estimated CPC in AdWords can give you an idea, but then this is not organic competition. Some high value PPC keywords are easy to get organic rankings for and vice versa.

The level of competition is determined not by the number of sites in the running, but by how hard they are competing. The only way to get a real idea of the level of competition is to assess the link profiles of the top ten sites and how often (and where) they get mentioned on the web as a whole.

This should also give you your SEO strategy.
