My site is a new directory with a Page Rank of 3. It already has quite a few backlinks and has recently had about 4 sites with PR4 and 5.My question is - how many backlinks of PR3 and 4 does it take before my page rank increases? Is this common knowledge or more of a guess?
Cheers

In my own opinion and experience getting PR 2 needs double the work to get to 1, PR3 needs double the work to get to 2 and PR4 needs double the work to get to 5.
With regards to how many links it will take, I don't know. It depends on the link pages PR and how many links it has pointing out of it (including nofollow)

Simple piece of advice - forget page rank. Worry about relevance, keyword anchor text and your traffic to conversion ratio's. Once thats all satisfactory, then waste time worrying about PR.

I totally agree, however I own a directory, so it is important for other web designers that my site has a good PR rank.

Does anyone know how many backlinks are worth 1 of the back links a page rank above it?
Example (100 level 1 page ranks = 1 level 2 page rank) etc...

Why do you want to know how long it takes? I assume you will continue to do those things that thefandango said based on quality of links, link text and relevance regardless of knowing how long it will take? Also, even if you knew, you would have to wait for the search engines to catch up and display your PR accurately anyway.
My advice is to keep plugging away.
Good luck.

If you are very much interested in increasing the PR of your website perhaps buying a few high PR links could be the answer but nowadays the PageRank is not a determining factor in rankings of the websites.
