Based on a 12 week seo process, how effective would it be to based the seo techniques on 10 keyword phrases? Is it better to concentrate on say 5 instead, or does this not matter if you've got a targeted content rich site?

All input much appreciated

Thanks,
Emma

Ten is OK but obviously the fewer phrases you target the easier it is to include them in page titles, descriptions etc. Remember, keyphrases in your home page title/description are given a lot more weight than those that appear in inner page titles etc. I'd say about 5 is ideal unless you have a very large site with a huge amount of content.

And don't think you will get away with including all 10 in your homepage title etc. You will simply erode the value of the page title completely by doing that.

That's the key question eh?! It all depends on how much competition there is for each phrase.

If you're going for several then you're going to need a 'deeper' strategy with different pages targeting different searches - but then a deep strategy is always best.
Go too overboard and, no matter what happens with the search engines, your homepage runs into the danger of becoming too general, too spammy and loses it's effectiveness when visitors actually land.

Forgetting about SEO for a minute... if your site's pages aren't focused then it's harder to convert real visitors into customers. If the different phrases are closely related and relevant to each other then it's much better and leads to a stronger SEO performance - if you're going for 10 completely unrelated phrases then you've got your work cut out! :D

The site is actually poorly designed in tables, not my myself, but by another company, I've just noticed the urls all look like the following:

http://www.sitename....f86c1f9070a7297

You mentioned having site's pages focused, how would this effect it?

Thanks,
Emma

ahh ok so they are related. personally I would target the homepage to the most lucrative 2-3-4 keywords and then make the best use of the internal linking structure to promote the inner pages. That way you will have very focused pages. Is it an ecommerce site? And yea change the URLS so they have the keywords in them.
