Hi Guys. I am trying to get some ideas as to which is the most popular way of creating E-commerce sites these days and the problems/benefits of each one.
1. What language do you use?
2. Is it easy to maintain?
3. Open source/Pay through the nose?
4. Are your sites 100% secure?
5. Would you recommend it to a friend?
6. Difficulty rating A)Beginner, for someone with little programming knowledge B)Intermediate, someone who has dabbled with a few languages including asp but as yet hasn't mastered it C) Expert, Strong programming knowledge
Thanks for your replies in advance!

There are popular ways and right ways. To do this correctly you need to created a highly detailed specification list so you know what you want to achieve. Then take your list and match it up with as many cart systems as you can, this should wittle things down to a shortlist to choose from. Voila you hopefully have a solution!
Personally I use Jshop for most ecommerce projects. It's secure, flexible and has top notch developer support. I'll base my answer on Jshop...
1. What language do you use?
PHP/HTML/CSS
2. Is it easy to maintain?
Yes
3. Open source/Pay through the nose?
It's a snip at £200+vat for a licence
4. Are your sites 100% secure?
The software is secure enough, if there's an issue patches are usually available in hours/days. Most insecurities come from poor hosting or people using weak passwords
5. Would you recommend it to a friend?
I already have many times
6. Difficulty rating A)Beginner, for someone with little programming knowledge B)Intermediate, someone who has dabbled with a few languages including asp but as yet hasn't mastered it C) Expert, Strong programming knowledge
You don't need to know any PHP with Jshop but having knowledge of HTML and CSS is a must. If you do know some PHP you can do your own customisations if you really wanted to, but there are few times you'd need to. Jshop has it's own tagging system and these tags are placed where you want the data to output, eg there's a tag for your categories, another for a product list etc. You can also manipulate tags to show only specific info such as a certain group of categories - all good stuff!
