Always found Wordpress to be easy to use and has a massive online community for help ( not saying Joomla, Drupal etc don't ).
I find sticking to one CMS and get to know it inside out is the key.

This is a great site that lets you try out some of the free and open source software systems.

http://www.opensourcecms.com/

It should be useful to all of you who are unsure which CMS is the right one for you. It has information, ratings and also lets you go into the admin panels and see what the backends look like and work. So it will save a lot of time as there is no need to download all the different ones to see which one suites your needs as a site has done that for you :)

EDIT:

Also have a look at www.cmsmatrix.org it lets you compare up to 10 CMS's in great detail- thanks to rjdejong for the link :)

Yes I like it, this so different then the other CMS..Look more friendly.

I personally work on three CMS: WP, Drupal, Joomla! . I must commend that all of them are really good. Drupal is more of developer's friendly. WP is an amazing blogging platform with quite a rich range of extensions and plugins.

Personally, I favour Joomla! because it has the largest and strongest support community available. It may be underrated by developers, but the benefit of a large, open, community of users cannot be underestimated. Support is very important.

I also am in favour of the ideals of FOSS and firmly believe that FOSS can ultimately deliver a superior product, as their is no ulterior motive to it's development.

And, I like GPL. If it is running on my server and I want to change the code, I damn well will change the code. Why should code be sucking up server resources solely for the purpose of preventing me having a peek at it (zend, ioncube, etc.)?

Cost is not the only factor, though I will admit I don't like paying for something when better tools are avaiable for free. Though when the world's 3rd largest retailer, with profits >£2b, chooses Joomla! you know it ain't about the price!

I have used WordPress, Joomla and Drupal. I think three of these are just fantastic. With Joomla! you can make amazingly beautiful websites. That is why it is called designer's friend. Where as Drupal is developer's friendly.

Joomla is best cms because it consider very easy to install and it’s more active component. Joomla sounds very clever but it has a horrible back end.

I agree Mahesh10, The administrative Panel is a bit tough to understand new designer.

Wordpress is better in terms of SEO.

We use our own custom built CMS, but I hear good things about Ubraco and its free/opensource.

I have looked at opensourcecms but decided to use simplecms instead; just personal preference but I do love WordPress especially 3.0.1.
It’s awesome and opens up so many more doors and the SEO side of it is amazing :)

As you say, this is free. If you want anything other than the basic functionality though you need to pay for the additional add ons you'll need. Not as free as it first appears. Though it is a good and easy to use system.

I'm using Ao. CMS. Something i created for myself because i didn't find anything that would be as easy to understand as i wanted and as easy to change as i wanted. Otherwise i would support WordPress fully, while it is the ultimate blogging engine, it also has the power of a really decent Content Management System.

I have a simple question on this. I am about to start developing an e-commerce site and CMS is clearly the best way forward so that they can manage all their products themselves.

It must have a simple back-end for managing projects and free if possible.

There are so many and I've just a site based on ZenCart, which they were happy with but I think the back-end is complex and fitting in the template was not simple.

What is truly the best balance of simplicity for us as designers and the client as end-user?

Thanks in advance!

Nice thread, I have used Joomla, wordpress, silverstripe and many CMSs. they are all pretty good. However when it comes to small website when client wants something really really simple I suggest use Veolay, it allows you to change content on the design itself which makes it super easy for my clients at the end of the day.

I just went through some links in this post,To look at which CMS is the best, easy to learn and implement it accordingly,I opted Joomla to be the best cms according to me,where we can install the opensource software quickly and it is easy to create a website using this cms, also any non technical user can modify, add, change or delete the content, images, videos or any thing in the website..

No CMS found perfect till date and still experimenting basically in web development the cms provider always fails to bridge the gape between the coders and the designers till date i found only two cms which are both designer and coder friendly one is "EE" and other is "COUCH CMS" and those two are also not perfect others are
drupal (coders only)
Joomla(messy adm panel ! my clients opinion )
wordpress (best for blogging)
EE (difficult and Expensive)
Cushy (good for small sites)
Currently trying out Couch cms (good for designers but code is encrypted)

and lots of intermediate cms tried BUT none is perfect

hi ,

There are lot of CMS available in the web development In my point of view Drupal is better than others.
Which is the open source CMS platform that is Very useful for content management and drupal web development. This is not the 'add on' content management system feature of old, but a whole new way of creating great looking and highly functional online masterpieces that allow the client complete control over the content and function of the web experience.

thanks

Joomla is the way to go and i will strongly explain below why.

I always choose Joomla for my clients for one reason, COMMUNITY. Believe it or not you cannot imagine how easy your life can be when you are looking to put something extra on your site and you are almost 90% sure that in Joomla someone has already develop it and will be available for free download or for a small insignificant amount of money. And i am not talking about individual programmers that are home and developing scripts and share them. Joomla has developed monster companies behind it with serious and very professional work with components and modules that can blow your mind.
This has saved me hours/days maybe weeks of coding hours in my life. Of course developer and designer will always needed to do the customizations but honestly thats the catch about joomla.

But of course things cannot be so great right? ;) There is something you will have be aware of:

Security:
Big community means that you can solve easily more problems but also they can be created more easy. With Joomla you must be 100 times more careful than other CMS not because is less secure but because more hackers looking for leaks. You need to update often, backup and protect your site all the time.

After saying all this i guarantee you that Joomla is not the best CMS, Drupal is better than Joomla. But there is no such a thing as best CMS. The right phrase is "What is best for your needs?"

cheers

Wordpress for quite a few projects, but also Expression Engine. People come to EE though and don't quite get it straight off! There is a learning curve like anything, but it's worth sticking with as you soon begin to realise how powerful EE can be.

And it can be absolute childs play for a client to maintain their site in Expression Engine.

As I say I flick between the two dependant on the project sometimes, love em both!!

I work with different CMS: Drupal, Joomla, WordPress, Mambo. All of them have many advantages, but I prefer WordPress as many of you. Also WordPress offers plugins which allow to create eCommerce application. So we can modify standart WordPress website to ready-made web store.
