A topic done to death I'm sure but I'm not big on my SEO and was curious if hosting a .com website on a US MediaTemple VPS server would show up in Google UK only results? I'm getting sick of the expensive UK hosting plans so want to move back to cheaper US versions and upgrade from shared to VPS to boot.

Any and all advice is appeciated! ^_^

It's hard to say to be honest. Having your site hosted on an IP address from a different country does have negative effects on your hosting, but you could put a mask on that by having a dedicated IP or something, I'm not one hundred per cent, but I know that it's usually preferential to be hosted in your own country/continent.

I tend to try to think of things as a points system, Hosting a uk site on a us server will lose you a few points on uk rankings, but you can claw these back easily enough.

Make use of things like the <address> tag, make the location prodominant on the website, fill in geo meta tags, submit locations to google local and yahoo local etc. and you should be fine, just make your companies physical location obvious to search engines and this will begin to outweigh the server location.

Thanks for the help guys. I've decided to stick with a UK host just because it's going to be easier in the long run. I'm now in the process of finding one that support Git, SSH, and isn't restricting me so much…

I personally would make sure at least one uk aspect is kept. Either a UK domain of a US ip or non UK domain on a UK ip.
