Hi,

I have created a site over 2 months ago. Put in good content, meta tags etc and created a sitemap plus I got a few backlinks in. However Google is still showing some old meta descriptions and will not update it and give it a decent ranking as a result. I have just re-done a new sitemap, but was wondering how long google takes to update it on the search?

The only thing I can think of is that I had a different domain on the site originally and replaced it with a new domain, would this make a difference?

Neil

Meta desc helps google rankings??

Digg your pages with the old desc and it should get looked at pretty quickly.

If you create a few backlinks to the site for the bots to follow than generally it only takes a few days for the site to be indexed by Google. The last site I built took 3 days to index after I added a link to it from my twitter page.

Yes, I did all those things. Its so strange, Yahoo has automatically ranked me no 1 for 'Brighton property' but I just can't get anywhere with google.

I've tried switching my old site back on to that hosting space and placed the new one on to a new hosting client. Not sure if this will help, but I've run out of ideas.

'Brighton Property' is likely to be fairly competitive as anyone operating in the property industry will immediately think of property {town} as a keyphrase.

If your site is young that'll be a tough nut to crack. Try focusing on a niche or longtail phrase like 'beachfront property' or 'luxury property' for example.

I'm not suggesting these keyphrases will have the volumes require - they are just examples.

Google places a lot of weight on anchor text in backlinks so create some with your chosen keyphrases.

I am aware that it is a tough nut to crack. However I like the challenge and have managed it before with the search 'flooring'. My problem is not google ranking me low. Its the google spiders not reading my site (they did read it originally and put up an old meta description, but have not updated it since).

If you make regular content changes the bots will visit more often. Adding an RSS feed is a good way to create changing content without any manual effort. But don't rely on them entirely and only use them if they really add value too.

If you've change your domain and have not done any steps to have your old domain pointed to your new one then I guess your new domain will be treated by google as new and it will be like you have to go back from the start of not having any link back on that new domain. I guess you should try to point your old domain to your new one, google will see your site directly as you are gaining backlinks already because of that old domain's back links. But that is if you have some.
