Hi all, what do you thin of the tactic that soeme employ where they have a main site which = designcompany.com
but then blatantly have 5/6 other sites maybe called logodesigncompanyarea.com and webdesigncompanyarea.com then setup all linking to the main website etc etc?
opinions? worthit? waste of time? black-hat?

Well it's definitely not organic and you could get penalised for it if found out. If they are all PR0 I can't see it being beneficial in any way and as you'll need unique content, titles and metas it could take a lot of time for minimal results (search engines can recognise duplicated websites and content).
I wouldn't bother, check out http://www.seobook.c...ltiple-websites

I friend of mine works at a company which sells pet stuffs, plumbing stuffs, camping stuffs, and electric stuffs. So 4 sites. they then buy a domain for each catagory for each site, stick them on a load of different servers with different IPs and watch the £5m profit per year roll in. Its defo worth it!

So long as the content isn't duplicated then there is some value in doing this if you use domain names that contain targeted keywords. However, any benefit needs to be offset against the extra cost in terms of time and money that numerous sites require. I personally think it is better to focus on promoting one domain name unless your company operates specialist services in multiple niches.

It definitely is not organic indeed but sure do that a lot use this method specially if their other websites are ranking good. Maybe try on the organic side of SEO, that means you got to start from the basic of SEO. Also, websites keywords are really competent so you need really lots and lots of patients for it.
