CSS List Menu Changing the "current" state

Since i've started using CSS menu's, I've never been entirely sure that the way I go about specifying the "current" or "selected" menu item.

At the moment, I'm repeating the code for the menu on every page and simply changing the pages class accordingly on the list.

Is there better ways of doing this? Or is this the only way?
