I'm a photographer, and supply stock images. There are better places for images, and iStock and other "micro-stock" sites aren't good. Essentially, the photographer has large overheads to cover, but microstock companies don't care, so photographers with iStock earn on average .50 cents per image they've taken with a $2,000 camera and perhaps a $1,000 lens. I'm sure you wouldn't want to be in a similar situation, giving away website templates for 50 cents a piece. Please support photography, as it does help support your trade, too.

I think "good" is probably in the eye of the beholder. I use sxc.hu when they have something that suits, or iStockPhoto and occasionally cutanddeal.com (because I work in online gaming) if I can't get what I need from sxc.hu. I've always managed to get what I need from one of the three, and I think iStockPhoto's prices are appropriate - they're certainly more reasonable than the ridiculous amounts charged by Getty...

A lot depends on how you want to use the sites as in if your just looking for a one off but then istockphoto I find is best but if you will be a regular buyer from a site then shutterstock is definately the best site to purchase from

Okay, I am a teacher and design the odd web page template for students to use as a basis for studying css and html. Recently I made a template that has a tree frog (taken off wikimedia commons) in the header. Out of curiosity I went to PhotoShelter, found a similar image to the one I got from Wikimedia Commons and had a look at the cost. For a 5 year circulation for the purpose of educational use they want $1175. That is significantly more than my monthly salary. And it is not even an exclusive pic, i.e. other people can purchase and use the same picture. Further, I can only use it for five years. I am sorry man, but this is just a bit excessive.
