Hello, before all I want to say this opportunity is not unpaid work, but close to it, so if you are looking for a good salary right now (which I perfectly understand) don't bother reading. But it's an interesting opportunity, in the sense that it is quite original.

Now the offer:

I need an exceptional designer / graphic artist for my startup. You can work remotely from anywhere in the world. I can say up front that for this role we are not able to pay a lot right now, so we are currently looking for a student profile or something like that. I know I will not get the best designer without paying high wages, but I hope to attract a promising student that we will keep in our company by offering high salaries later.

It's important to understand that we will try to reward loyalty, eg, the fact that someone started to work freely with us at first. I personnally have been working on my startup project for one year without being paid a single $ :)

Once we get funded (should happen in a few monthes) we can probably pay around 1500 $ / month for the role, depending on the amount of work we ask (this would not be a full time job at first). We would like you to be passionate about graphism and design, and willing to try the adventure of a startup.

The reason one may be interested in our project is that it is actually closely linked to web design. In fact we are developing a product to help designers write Web sites more quickly and easily. We are competing a bit against Dreamweaver, but our product is much, much different. I cannot say more right now but I will disclose more to interested people.

This also means that a designer will play an essential role in our team. It's not just making a website and be done with it; we need someone that will work with us for a long time, developing our product over the years. As I said, at first this wont be a full time job but once we get more money we would be able to employ a designer full time. And at very competitive rates, eg $ 100 / hour or so.

What I need is basically someone who feels he/she can design sites like those found in this link.. Or maybe not to that level, but close ;)

More details:

* Should be an excellent designer and master Gimp (Inkscape is a plus)
* Should know CSS / HTML well, or at least willing to learn
* Knowledge of JavaScript a big plus

The important thing is that knowing Gimp is a requirement, as it is essential for our projet. This is even more important than knowing CSS / HTML, so if you only know Photoshop, you must be sure that you can learn Gimp and that you will be willing to work with it and not with Photoshop. We need Gimp; Photoshop just cannot do what we want.

If you dont already know CSS / HTML, we will work together by you designing the site and sending me the .xcf / .psd file. I will integrate it (I know CSS / HTML very well but I am a very poor designer).

If interested, please contact me by mail (elvanor AT shoopz.com) or reply here, or pm me. Send me your resume or at least details about yourself (age, position, experience, where do you live, why you would fit my requirements etc) I am French by the way.

Jean-Noel

PS: While I cannot point out details (investors do want confidentiality) about our financement, I can say the following:

* The funding process is started but should not be over for the next three monthes. So we don't have any cash for the next three monthes.

* While there is always a chance that investors back out, I think we are mostly ok after that. Given our budget, we will be able to pay between $1000 and $1500 monthly for our lead designer as I said. This won't be a full time job - eg it wont take you all your time.

And we will give out all due information to our employees, exactly in the same way we disclose this information to our investors. But like the investors, we don't disclose too much at the beginning when we dont even know the person yet.

Why Gimp? I mean what Gimp can do Photoshop can do also. I've tried to give gimp a chance for web design but it just doesn't cut it. It often takes half a dozen more steps to do something in Gimp that takes 1 step to do in Photoshop.

You must be joking. What version are you using, 1.0? Please give an example of something GIMP can do that Photoshop cannot.

Give you an open-source API that might be useful if building web design software? :D

Granted, photoshop is better than gimp. But for an honest start up, sinking a few G into legit software maybe a bit steep. Gimp however, is low cost, and i have seen people do amazing things with gimp. I've never used it so can't comment on it's functionality, but for a freeby, it sure blows paint out the water.

wizely guessed it; it gives us a solid open source API to build upon. Believe me, Photoshop does not allow what we need. It's not about the price of PS.
