That doesn't work with vista although they do have a walkthrough on how to set up IE6 on vista here:

you could just use browser shot which will take screenshots for you from different browsers on different OS's so you can see how it looks:

I have found IE NetRenderer to be much faster than browsershots.

Run XP on a Virtual Machine. Thats the only way i know of with Vista.

Virtual PC for Vista is Microsofts own VM release, you just fire it up, install XP on it and run it inside of Vista if you know what i mean.

Also there is VMWare to do the job also.

Or he could just use a much simpler online solution - what's the point of going through all that hassle just to achieve a goal that is already achievable?

There is nothing wrong with giving all possible solutions, just because you don't think that one is the easiest doesn't mean that someone else won't think that is easier to do.
