This is pretty interesting, http://www.google.co...lebooks/chrome/. Google is releasing an open source browser. What's really interesting is each tab is a thread, I can't wait to get me some of that source code and check it out! What do you guys think of all this? It uses WebKit so if your sites work in Safari then you should be good.

I'm so excited!

This looks like google is going to (yet again) change the computing world and show folks how to do things properly. They have such an advantage being both new and successful. They can take any problem which other people have been working on for years and have as such built up a set of entrenched solutions (like tabs below the URL bar) and just say wait a minute... lets do something else.

So much fresh thinking, and I know some people are wary of google, but after having met a couple of employees I really am not.

I love the cartoon as well.

I read the whole presentation, got really excited by it (despite it being google) only to find out that they're only developing for windoze :(
[edit] just read that they will follow up 'at some stage' with support for linux & mac. :)

Thank God for Google's snapping-up of every great idea out there! It's about time someone took a step back with everything internet and said "Holy crap we're still doing things based on technology designed before we knew what the internet could even be". I'm excited as I'm too stupid to use linux! :pp

This is a live blog of the press conference Google are currently holding (with Chrome released/more details coming straight afterwards)

And here is a live video stream of the conference.

First impressions are that it's lightning fast and solid as hell. No doubt some genius will work out how to hack into it or crash it before long, though. Good on you Google for taking on the big boys, and extra kudos for making it open-source!!

and it uses WebKit (hooray for Apple!). Right click on something and click on "Inspect Element" and tell me that isn't nifty! (This is old news to Safari WebKit users)

Wow, I didn't think the difference would be this great, admitedly I've used it for no more than five minutes but it all seems so fast, I had no idea a browser could make this much difference!

You can see the different processes in windows task manager for each tab (and chrome has it's own), I do wonder if this could end up hogging tons of memory though!

Like it, really fast. Quick look at some recent sites i've designed and all look fine.

Needs the bookmarks link in the top bar though

Holy crap, using it right now. Love it. I'm going to be using it as my main browser for now. But it still needs FireBug (or something similar) and an auto re-sizer for me consider using it as a web development browser. Can't imagine doing AJAX with out firebug, heh.

I'm using it at the moment, looks good. Like the new tab opening with your top favs and recent bookmarks. The url bar integrating with search is nice.

Did you notice that Cuil is one of the search engines you can default to? - no hard feelings there then.

ctrl+F - is very nice, search for something then notice the scrollbar shows you where in the page the highlighted terms are.

Once the Web Developer extension gets Chromed Up then it looks like I'll be making a semi-permanent switch.

I can't see any reference to PageRank - is it declared dead in the water by it's omission?

Been using it this morning and thoughts are;

Very quick
Nice and simple
Love the inspect element (nifty)
Except for the bookmark toolbar, is there another easy way to see bookmarks?

I would assume it's more to do with the fact that Google has deliberately not included any link to any of it's own technology or products? The first thing that Chrome offers you is the opportunity NOT to use Google search. I think they want to sell this as a concept without too many ties to Google. Microsoft sold their OS with a browser in it, providing Chrome with everything googlified would be similar and I believe that Google are try to show that they have different morals.

I could be wrong, pagerank could just be dead of course!

I think it's chrome, I had it before with firefox/flock but the spell check looked different.

It is Chrome,
and after using it all day it is currently a bit of a memory hog... with 3 - 4 tabs open it uses 3 times the memory of Outlook 2007!!

Still love it though, just not sure my PC does...

First thoughts were, "Oh great, another browser I have to test my sites in and code for". I'm quite impressed with it though because all my sites displayed correctly in it, and in typing this I've even noticed it has an in-built spell check. Fast to load and use. Nice.

I think it's fantastic, I really like the simplicity of it, i've never really been attached to any browser and use Firefox due to the web developer tool bar and firebug. So it has become my main browser - but over the past year or so i've found Firefox to crash more often.

Google Chrome uses Apple's WebKit rendering engine (Same as Safari) and passes the Acid 2 test and got 78 out of 100 for Acid 3, just behind Opera - so you shouldn't have to worry about designing for another browser too much.*touch wood* - I foudn the scrolling to be jittery and not as smooth as other browsers.

Google being Google - do you think they are recording everypage you look at...??

I really like it so far, I havn't explored it extensively yet, but thumbs up so far!

:)

Annoyances with it (been using it most of today);

Can't scroll with the scroll wheel (where you press the scroll wheel down and move the mouse up and down).

No "Add To Dictionary" in the Spell Check?

Yeah I noticed the scroll wheel issue, I'm sure that will be introduced in a later release.

All I need now is to be able to use mouse gestures, then it will make it as my main browser!

What don't you like about it? There is hardly much offensive or even 'Google' going on with Chrome. Their mission is for people to forget about the browser and preferably not even notice it's there – hence having such little browser chrome around the windows. I think this is a great progression in the browser industry and a killer opening salvo in the direction of Microsoft.
